Teaching computers to read books, Google acquired ReCAPTCHA
If you know what ReCAPTCHA is? or understand the picture on the left, good, else read my article stop spam, read books.
ReCAPTCHA offers simple word puzzles that users must solve when registering at a website or completing an online purchase.
Computers can’t decipher the twisted letters and numbers, ensuring that real people and not automated programs are at the keyboard.
Unlike other word puzzles, however, ReCAPTCHA’s text comes from actual books, letting the system create a digitized version in the process.
“Google is the best fit for reCAPTCHA,” said Carnegie Mellon computer science professor Luis von Ahn, who developed the tool and launched the ReCAPTCHA company in 2008. “From the very start, people often assumed the project was connected to Google, so it only makes sense that reCAPTCHA Inc. ultimately would find a home within Google.” source usatoday.com
This falls in the favor of Google as we know Google is trying hard to digitize every book it can, though Amazon, Microsoft and Yahoo don’t like Open Books Concept.
However, this is something good for avid book readers here:-
In this way, reCAPTCHA’s unique technology improves the process that converts scanned images into plain text, known as Optical Character Recognition (OCR). This technology also powers large scale text scanning projects like Google Books and Google News Archive Search. Having the text version of documents is important because plain text can be searched, easily rendered on mobile devices and displayed to visually impaired users. So we’ll be applying the technology within Google not only to increase fraud and spam protection for Google products but also to improve our books and newspaper scanning process. -source googleblog.blogspot.com
